Homework

The nightly homework is always to read. Anything! Find yourself something that you're really into so that you'll keep reading it: Novels, biographies, informational books, comics, story books, magazines, etc.  Here, you will find some resources and ideas to help you with that. In addition, take a look at some ideas for French shows at home.  This goes such a long way in helping you with your French and it can be a fun way to show (and show off!) your families what you're up to.  I've also added a few other cool things that I may ask you to do for homework.

French Resources:

Word Reference

This is an online dictionary that can be used as a traditional English dictionary, or for French-English (or any language) translation.  It is fantastic and I highly recommend it over something like Google Translate.

Radio Canada Jeunesse

Here you will find, shows, games, blogs, etc., all in French! I highly recommend watching a show or two (or more!) a week.  You can find them in the section "émissions".

Short Edition Jeunesse

This Website offers reading materials geared for children from 8-12.  It is divided into thematic categories, as well as length of time it will take to read the material.

Chapters-French books

We do have a collection of French reading material here in class, but I have also been asked how to buy appropriate French reading material on your own.  I looked up the French, grade five section on the Chapters Website, and this is what I found.  Check any grade, of course! The most important thing is that your child is interested and motivated to read their selection.

Teaching Kids News

This is an interesting Website with current, but age appropriate, news.  It's divided into categories like a newspaper.

Projects:

Our special projects or passion projects, as I like to think of them. I know we complete these at school, but you are more than welcome to bring them home to spend even more time diving into something you're passionate about!

Parents: These are special projects we complete when we are finished with our other work in class.  They are meant to create rich learning experiences that each student gets to choose for themselves.  Sometimes they can be completed in groups, sometimes they require materials, sometimes they are quick, sometimes they span weeks or months.  It's completely up to each student, but I try to guide them into a project that helps push them personally and academically.
